66 % of the 5.5 million U.S. businesses with 2 to 499 employees have a
website of some kind (est. of 2006), according to Yankee group, a
Boston Consulting Group. Almost all companies realize that the Internet
is a critical factor for business. Companies are aware of the
importance of the Internet to their business. Therefore they are
investing more and more in advertising and technology online. Most
businesses understand that the Internet can create a good ROI (return
on investment).
Before E-Commerce became popular, websites just
had the purpose to show potential customers a telephone number or
address where they could be reached. However, soon business people
realized that technology can help them to do much more with the
Internet; like selling products. Today you can buy almost everything
online. There are special auctions where you can get a good price for a
product that is much more expansive in shops. E-bay is such an auction;
basically everybody can sell their stuff there, from pens to cars, from
collector’s items to normal clothes, everything that you can imagine.
Selling
products online will not make sure your sales will go up, because if
people do not know of your Website they will not go there. That is
where Online Marketing came in, in a different form; online
advertising. Today there are many different kinds of advertisements
online. In the U.S. the spending on online advertising become more
every year and will become more and more every year.
In 2005 Bill Gates, founder and currently chairman of the software
giant Microsoft, claimed that eventually most businesses will use blogs
to communicate with customers, suppliers and employees, because it's

Today I heard for the first time the term Social Media Optimization. I thought this was a facinating new thing and started researching it. I was amazed that there was already a wikipedia text about it, but most interesting is the social media optimization blog by David Wilson. Apperently it has been existing for quite some while, but why is this term not used more...
